Department of Botany & Microbiology

The department was established in the academic session 1998-99 with a motto of Excellence through Perseverance. The Department of Botany and Microbiology is presently forgoing ahead with 2 UG courses (Botany and Industrial Microbiology) and PG course in Microbiology, setting new land marks in teaching and learning.

Holistic development of learners is ensured through outstanding teaching by well qualified and experienced faculty, various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities including  research work, Paper/Book reviews, Expert talks from eminent resource persons around the nation and globe, local/Regional/National Field Trips, Industrial visits, Certificate Courses, Internship Programmes, Consultancy/Extension Services, Social Outreach Programmes, Seminars, Hands on Training, Workshops, Career Guidance talks

After B. Sc. in Botany/Microbiology, students can pursue Masters degree in Microbiology and other allied fields. Students can seek employment as Officers Executives, Production Managers, Analysts, Project Assistants, teachers/ professors, Auditors, in Food and Beverage industries, Pharmaceutical companies, Microbiology and Biotechnology based companies, Pathology Laboratories, hospitals, Water packaging industries, cosmetics Treatment Plants, Agriculture Departments etc. They can start up food processing units, biogas plant, waste management units, mushroom cultivation units, diagnostic centers and other small agro based industries.

2022-23

Student project

UG-PG students of the department undertook a project by D.I.C (Design and Innovation Center) in collaboration with Aventura Technology LLP. The project commenced from August 2022. Students learnt techniques of less water irrigation technology with the aim to make irrigation more productive and to help farmers to create a sustainable method by which water can be conserved (Hydroponic and Olla technique).

Expert talk by Alumni

Department organized a career guidance talk on 20th August 2022 by an aluminous Ms. Shaina Gaikwad, JRF, ICMR NIREH, Bhopal. She shared her experience and knowledge with students and guided to prepare for competitive exams in Life sciences majorly including CSIR NET, UGC NET, GATE etc. She also gave insights on various research institutes which are offering JRF vacancies in the current year.

Bonsai Training program

With an objective of developing entrepreneurship skill among students, the department organized a training program on “Bonsai Cultivation” on 3rd September 2022. The  resource person of the event was Mrs Manisha Dube. She also displayed her collection of bonsai plants and gave demonstration to prepare bonsai plant.

Lab Visit of school students

On 9th and 10th September 2022, school students of Madan Mahal Swarswati Shishu Mandir, St. Norbet Senior Secondary, Army Public School gate no. 2 and Symbiosis school Adhartal visited the department. Information regarding instruments, tools and techniques was given to inculcate interest in Science among the students and make them to understand the concept of  Biology.

Guest lecture on Ethics for Botanist and Microbiologist

Department organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Ethics for Botanists and Microbiologists’ on 10th September 2022 (Saturday). The resource person for the program was Dr. Sapna Rai, Assistant. Professor, Department of Botany, Government College Harrai, Chhindwara (M. P.) The students learned the aspects of ethical working, the importance of working ethics in laboratories, industries, as entrepreneurs and also shared their doubts with the speaker.

International Microorganism Day

The Program of International Microorganisms’ Day was organized by the department from 17th to 24th September 2022. On this occasion various competitions were held like: Fungal photography, Meme competition, what do u see in ocular, # on agar, Quiz, in the competitions. Students from all the science streams have actively participated. The winners were awarded with prizes on the last day of program by Dr. Mrs. Anjali D’Souza (Vice-Principal).

Certificate course in mushroom cultivation

The certificate course in Mushroom Cultivation commenced from 27th September 2022.

Interdepartmental activity

One faculty member gave an expert talk on the topic “Digital Microscope and it’s applications” on 28th September 2022 in certificate course on Instrumentation and Analytical Techniques organized by Department of  Chemistry.

Educational trip under MoU

Students and faculty of St. Pouis College Hyderabad visited college on 29th September 2022. The students visited the lab where a brief introduction to various lab facilities was provided to them by the faculty members along with career counselling and future guidance in Bio arena. A group discussion session was held where both the colleges shared their best practices and future collaborations.

COLLAGE COMPETITION

Department in collaboration with Aloysian Nature club organized a Collage competition on the theme “Only One Earth” on 8th October 2022. Students of Botany, Zoology and Industrial Microbiology participated showcasing various aspects of the mother earth. The collages gave an insight of the benefits, significance and also the threats to mother earth.

participation in National Seminar

The faculty members along with UG and PG students participated in the National Seminar entitled “Current Scenario and Innovative Approaches for Environmental Sustainability” on 18th October 2022 organized by Rani Durgawati University, JBP.

Students participated in prototype and poster presentation competition. Four UG Students presented their innovative products. Prototypes and posters were presented by 2 PG students and 1 research scholar. Dr. Mamta Gokhale, Asst. Prof. was felicitated by the organizing committee for her patent. The research scholar Ms. Isha Deshpandey got first prize in poster presentation.

Plantation program

With an aim of increasing greenery in the college campus, an eco-friendly move through Rose plantation was organised by the Department in collaboration with Nature Club on 18th October 2022. More than 180 rose plants were planted in the college campus.

National  workshop under Stuti

The Department organised a seven-days workshop on Analytical Techniques from 21st to 27th November, 2022. The workshop was funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Synergetic Training Program Utilising the Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (STUTI) scheme in collaboration with IIT Gandhinagar. Applicants from all over India including students and faculty from various disciplines of Life Sciences participated in the workshop. This workshop aimed to provide an insight into the basic principles and advanced usage of different equipment based on analytical techniques such as AFM, Reflectometer, Flame photometer, Air Sampler, Fluorescence microscope and FTIR. The participants were introduced to the basic concepts of image generation, instrumentation and the advanced modes of operation. The objective of this workshop was aimed to provide hands-on training to the participants on DST funded instruments to promote the expansion of R&D Infrastructure at the institutions by ensuring transparent access to S&T facilities.

Certificate course in water quality monitoring

The certificate course in Water  Quality Monitoring commenced from 1st  December 2022.

Awareness Program on Water Pollution

On the occasion of pollution control day, an awareness program on water pollution was organized by the Department on 3rd December 2022. The students created awareness amongst natives and visitors about water pollution through posters and slogans at Gwarighat, Narmada river, Jabalpur.

Guest lecture

On 24th November 2022 a guest lecture on Agri startup  was organized in collaboration with  Jawahar RKVY-RAFTAAR agribusiness Incubator, JNKVV and IIC, SAC, JBP with the aim to make students aware about opportunities in the field of agriculture.   The speaker was Mrs. Laveena Sharma, Buisness Manager, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur.

Summer Training

The department had organize a summer training program on Trends in Microbiology from 23rd – 27th June 2023 During which the UG and PG students learnt about sophisticated instruments and microbial techniques.

Highlights of session 2021-22

 Guest lectures

  • Under DBT Star scheme the department organized a guest lecture on “Invasive plant species and our environment” by Puja Ray, Assistant Professor, Presidency University, Kolkata on 30th September 2021.71 students attended the lecture.
  • On the occasion of World Food Day on 23rd October 2021 the department organized a guest lecture on “Dietary oils and health” by Dr. Daniel A. Gibleon, Bishop Heber College, 54 students of UG and PG attended the webinar.
  • The department organized a guest lecture on “Identification of Fungal culture” by Rohit Sharma, Assistant Professor, SAGE University under DBT Star scheme on 2nd March 2022.

World Food Day celebration

On 23rd October 2021 Department of Botany and Microbiology had organized an awareness program about global hunger and struggle to eradicate the food shortage. Faculty members and students of the department distributed edibles to the poor and needy people in the nearby places and experienced joy of giving.

Rose Plantation

On 26th October 2021, Rose plantation was organized by the Dept. of Botany and Microbiology in collaboration with Nature’s Club. The eco-friendly move towards beautiful rose plantation with excellent thought of increasing greenery in campus was successfully done with students.

Faculty Enrichment Program

On 29th -30th October 2021 department organized Faculty Enrichment Program on “Bench marking skill development at school level” sponsored by DBT Star scheme  in which 30 teaching faculties from different schools across Jabalpur participated. The aim of this program was to inculcate knowledge about recent trends in research and techniques in Biology and to enhance practical skills amongst the learners. Member of the department gave demonstration of DNA isolation followed by Gel electrophoresis to the participants.

On 21st to 26th February 2022 Department of Botany and Microbiology organized a Faculty Development Programme on “Innovative Research Practices” from 21st– 26th February 2022 sponsored by DBT Star College Scheme. Various aspects of innovative research i.e. Determination of total content of phytochemical constituents in the crude drugs & the herbal formulation, XRD techniques, FTIR techniques, study enzyme catalysed reaction & process of  immobilization, Vegetation study and ordination analyses for ecological purpose and Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal studies: From theory to Practice and its applications was covered by  resource persons Dr. Bhavisha Patel and Dr. Vivek Shrivastav from Parul University, Vadodara, Gujarat, Dr. Deepti Deshpande, Dr. Manju Gupta, Dr. Debabrata Das, Dr. Pampi Ghosh , Jhargram, West Bengal. Total 88 faculties from different Universities, college and schools across India attended the online program.

Memorandum of understanding

On 4th December 2021, a Mutual non-disclosure agreement & MoU was signed between Aventura Technologies, Distt Thane, Maharashtra and St Aloysius College (Auto.), Jabalpur. The parties intend to investigate the prospect of working on a research project which will be referred to as Technology for Irrigation in least water availability areas. The purpose is to promote Agri-entrepreneurship and spread awareness among the students about agri-entrepreneurship programmes and schemes running under the aegis of Jawahar R-ABI (Agribusiness Incubation Centre), Institute of Agribusiness Management, Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University, Jabalpur, M.P.

Workshop Organized

Workshop on “Hydroponic: Practices & Benefits” was organized by the department in collaboration with Bio-design Innovation Centre on 22nd January 2022 to enlighten students about hydroponics, its farming and advantages. Resource person for the event was Mr. Angranshu Dwivedi, Jabalpur Incubation Centre.

National Science day celebration

On 26th February 2022 student of M.Sc. II semester Microbiology gave a tribute to the eminent scientist by acknowledging their great contributions for human welfare. Each student discussed the role of one eminent Microbiologist and also gave a report of the experimentation carried by the scientists as a reference for their future juniors. The program was aimed for inculcating research aptitude amongst students.

Eco fest was organized on 28th February 2022. Poster and Best out of waste competition were held for the UG and PG students of Biosciences. The theme of the poster competition was -Plan for the future- Sustainable development.

Certificate Courses

In order to enhance practical competencies, skill enhancement and entrepreneurship calibers, the department offers two certificate courses. The department successfully organized certificate courses on “Water Quality Monitoring” from 6th December 2021 and “Mushroom Cultivation” from 10th January 2022.

Interaction session with alumnus

Aman Khushwaha, an ex Aloysian, shared his working experience in the field of Microbiology, currently working as Research fellow in CSIR-NEERI Nagpur. He shared his experience of developing “saline gargle technique for testing of COVID-19 infection”. He discussed about the working techniques in a lab and practices in different lab cultures. His talk was followed by interactive session with the students. Students of B.Sc. IMB and M.Sc. Microbiology attended this interactive session.

Internship on Hydroponics.

Department organized Internship program for M.Sc. (Botany) IV sem students of  Govt. M.H. College of Home Science and Science, Jabalpur on Hydroponics from 3rd -10th March 2022  in collaboration with Bio-design Innovation Center of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) Jabalpur (M.P) India.

National Workshop on Organic Farming and Water Conservation

Two faculty members and M.Sc. II sem Microbiology students attended “National Workshop on Organic Farming and Water Conservation” from 4th -5th March 2022 organized by Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur, in collaboration with the Joint Director Agriculture, Jabalpur, Sehyog Narmadey Samiti, Jabalpur, Geolife, MPCST, Jal Biradri Tarun Bharat Sangh and Mandla Organics. Students gained knowledge about different aspects of organic farming, its benefits on human health and also on how to build a vertical farm.

Educational trip to Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Pachmarhi

An educational trip to National Center for Biological Sciences (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, TIFR), Pachmarhi, Jabalpur, M.P was organized on 9th -10th March 2022 sponsored by DBT star scheme. Two faculty members along with twenty seven students of B.Sc. I and II year IMB group participated in this trip. Students learned about different instruments like Gel electrophoresis apparatus, centrifuges based on latest technology, magnetic stirrer, etc. In the trip they learned about various moths, birds, moth cocoon, lichens, bear marks and biodiversity of Satpura forest in Pachmarhi.

Training program on Bonsai cultivation

A DBT-Star sponsored training program on Bonsai cultivation was organized by the Department of Botany and Microbiology for undergraduate students on 21st  March 2022. The resource person for the training programme was Mrs. Manisha Dubey, Managing Director, Dube surgical and Dental Hospital, President, Jabalpur Ladies Club. 36 students attended the program. They learned about the detailed procedures of designing and cultivating Bonsai from the available plants.

Earth Day Celebration

 Department in collaboration with Aloysian Nature club organized a Collage competition on the occasion of Earth Day on 22nd April 2022 on the topic “Save the Planet” to create awareness among students about global warming and climate change. The first three winners of the activity were awarded with certificates.

Dr. Sonali Nigam (HOD) Department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius College Jabalpur, M.P on the occasion of World Environment Day  gave an expert talk on  7th June 2022 organized by Government M.H. College of Home Science and Science, Jabalpur on the topic “Earth is Only one”.

An online National Quiz wasorganised on ‘PHYTOMEDICINAL PLANTS’ from 15th to 22nd July 2020, for UG/PG/Research scholars/Academicians. It was an effort to aware the youngsters about the medicinal uses of plants against microbial diseases. The quiz was attempted by 470 participants from all corners of the country.

 INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR

The faculty members organised an International webinar on ‘Invisible Living World: Challenges and Opportunities’ on29th July 2020. The webinar witnessed 300 participants from Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Jakarta, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and India. The eminent speakers  Dr.ShikhaBansal, Dr. FeminaSobin, Dr. MamtaGokhale, and Dr. Juhi Sharma (of the department) shared their valuable knowledge on different aspects of the topic during the deliberations.

  • Sunil Kumar Khare, senior scientist R.O. M.P. Pollution Control Board, Jabalpur delivered a lecture for PG and UG students on 16th January on ‘Environmental Pollution’.
  • SapnaRai from Government College, Harrai, Chhindwara addressed UG students on ‘Microbial Warfare on Plants’, ‘Microbial Role In Production Of Condensed and Dairy Milk’, ‘Indian fermented food’ on 30th January, 5thFebruary and 13thFeburary 2021.
  • Rohit Sharma, scientist, National Centre for Microbial Resource, Pune shared his views with UG and PG learners on ‘Techniques of Cultivation’ and Cultivation Management of Mushrooms’ on 16th and 17th February 2021.

 NATIONAL WEBINAR– Department in collaboration of BotanyDepartment, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur organised a National Webinar on 15th may 2020 on ‘Plant Tissue Culture: Techniques and Application’ for 240 UG/PG/Research scholars from all corners of the country. The participants witnessed the felicitation of Chief Guest Professor Y.K Bansal Department of Bioscience, RDVVand eminent speakers were Dr ManishaVyas, Dr MamtaGokhale, Dr Matthew Chako and Miss IshaDeshpande.

 

  • WORLD EARTH DAY – To mark the important day, an online National Slogan Competition on ‘Restore our Earth’ was organised on 22nd April 2021. 102 participants share their innovative ideas in the form of slogans. Three best were given a merit e-certificate.

  • Activities Organised  
  • VIRTUAL PLANTATION MISSION – Students of B.Sc. III year inNovember 2020 proposed and planted saplings in their garden or in pots withintheir houses and shared pictures and videos of the same. Through the onlineplanting project students conveyed message about the importance of plantation for the healthy life in their families and neighbourhood.
  • MICROBES AND ME It was an online competition for PG (Microbiology) students to click and share photos of any microbe in its natural habitat. Based on the photo they were required to give a PowerPoint Presentation. The objective was to aware them with the practical knowledge of microbes around them affecting human life.
  • E- FRESHERS PARTY – Students of M.Sc. IV Semester (Microbiology) organised and online Freshers Party for M.Sc. I semester on 22/10/20. This was an opportunity for freshers to have a virtual interaction with their seniors and super-seniors. Seniors shared their experience about Departmental Culture and Ethics, tobuild a Cordial environment among them.
  • WORLD HEALTH DAY – Students of B.Sc. I year planned a virtual celebration of ‘WORLD HEALTH DAY’ on 7th April 2021 on the theme ‘Interrelation of Plants and Human Health’. They share their views through PowerPoint Presentations.
  • WORLD ENVIRONMENTDAY – UG students organised a slogan competition on 5th June 2021 ‘Our Environment: Love and Care’ to convey the message of necessity and need of protecting the environment in the present pandemic situation.

  • Bonsai training program

Department of Botany and Microbiology in collaboration with Nature Club organized a DBT-Star sponsored Training Program on “Bonsai Cultivation” on 21.03.2022 (Monday). The resource person for the program was Mrs. Manisha Dube, Expert (Bonsai cultivation); Managing Director, Dube Surgical and Dental hospital, JBP; President, Jabalpur Ladies Club, Patron; Friends of Tribal Society and Event Manager at Hamara Jabalpur.

The department organized such a training program with a purpose to inculcate this skill among students which could help them in becoming an entrepreneur in this field. The training was attended by 46 students. The resource person very well demonstrated the overall process of making bonsai and also exhibited huge collection of her bonsai plants. This greatly motivated students to find their future in this field. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Femina Sobin.

  • Faculty as resource person

On 7th June 2022 a webinar was organized by Eco club of Government M.H. College of Home Science and Science wherein Dr. Sonali Nigam (HOD) Department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius College Jabalpur, M.P on “One Earth”. The program was held under the patronage and guidance of Principal Nandita Sarkar and was coordinated by Dr. Manisha Vyas.

Chief Guest for the function Prof. Y.K.Bansal, Former Head, Dept. of Biosciences, RDVV, JBP shared his experience and expertise on Plant Tissue Cultue very briefly. The speakers Ms. Isha Deshpande, Dr. Mathew Chacko, Dr. Mamta Gokhale, Mr. Piyush Sharma and Dr. Manisha Vyas delivered talks on  PTC: techniques and applications, Somatic embryogenesis and Plant tissue culture, Secondary metabolites and Plant tissue culture, Protoplast culture and cybrids, Conservation of rare medicinal plants through PTC. More than 200 participants attended the webinar. A quiz session was held at the end of the webinar and the winners were awarded with special certificates and cash prizes.

NATIONAL WEBINAR

Department in collaboration of BotanyDepartment, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur organised a National Webinar on15th may 2020 on ‘Plant Tissue Culture: Techniques and Application’ for 240 UG/PG/Research scholars from all corners of the country. WORLD EARTH DAY

To mark the important day, an online National Slogan Competition on ‘Restore our Earth’ was organised on 22nd April 2021. 102 participants share their innovative ideas in the form of slogans. Three best were given a merit e-certificate.

  • CELEBRATION OF MAHATMA GANDHI’S 150TH JAYANTI BY ALOYSIANS

Department of Botany and Microbiology organized a speech competition on ‘Ahinsa’ on the occassion of 150th jayanti of Mahatma Gandhi. Sixteen students participated in the competition witnessed by more than 80 students and teachers. The participants expressed thier views for 5 minutes each. Principal, Fr. G.Vazhan Arasu addressed the audience with the principles of Mahatma Gandhi based on non violence. ‘ Gandhi ji was of the view that ahinsa is the only way out for solving every problem of life’ was the view of a participant. Every speech was supported by the different incidences of Mahatmaji’s life based on Ahinsa. Winners were given the prizes by Dr. Elena Philip. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Shikha Bansal. The programme was managed by Dr. Sonali Nigam, Dr. Femina Sobin, Dr. Mamta Gokhale, Dr. Zareen Baksh, Mrs. Roshni Choubey and Dr. Juhi Sharma.

  • ALOYSIUS ORGANISED YOUTH PARLIAMENT ON SUSTAINABLE FUTURE (16-17 NOV 2019)

Department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius college (auto) Jabalpur organized a two day Narmada National youth parliament  on sustainable future, Measures for tomorrow. The programme was inaugurated in the presence of chief Guest Mrs. Ekta Agrawal Assistant commissioner Jabalpur municipal corporation . Rev. Fr.  Arasu principal motivated the student participants to give a serious thought for sustainable development and find out the measures to solve this problem. Dr .Shikha Bansal convener introduced with the objectives of the programme and encourage the youth to change their habits for developing a secure and safe future. More than 600 participants   from 50 different schools and of colleges of country were divided into ten committees equally. Toshit Chauhan Swastik  Singh And Utkarsh Mudaliyar of NNYP were instrumental in making the programme a success.

  • Celebration of 150th Birth anniversary Mahatma Gandhi

In order to revive the memories and teachings of idealism of Mahatma Gandhi, the department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius college (auto) Jabalpur  celebrated 150th birth anniversary of Bapu. On this occasion, a speech competition on the theme ‘AHINSA’ was organized. 16 students participated in the competition while 80 students witnessed the programme.

  • Celebration of Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti

In order to revive the memories and teachings of idealism of Shri Subhas Chandra Bose, the department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius college (auto) Jabalpur  celebrated Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti on 23rd January 2019 at 01: 00 p.m. On this occasion, a speech competition was organized on the life of Shri Bose. Around 75 students participated in the programme. The winners were awarded with prizes.

  • Ornamental crop culture technology: Rose Plantation

Faculty members of the department of Botany and Microbiology gave an input on the obectives and methodology of ornamental crop culture technology to the student members of Nature Club. This was followed by the plantation of  rose saplings and many other ornamental seasonal plants in the college garden to enhance the green and clean ambiance of the campus. Around 40 saplings were planted and are being nurtured regularly by the student guardian of individual sapling.

  • ECOFEST: SRIJAN 2020

The department of Botany and Microbiology organized  Ecofest under the banner of Srijan 2020 organized by the faculty of Bioscience, St. Aloysius College (Auto.) Jabalpur with the theme ‘Sustainable environment and its conservation’. The specific theme for the ecofest was ‘Plan for the Planet: for life on earth’. All the UG and PG students of Bioscience faculty enthusaistically participated in 4 activities organized by the department viz.  Poster competition with the theme ‘Role of women education in environmental sustainability’, Collage competition on the topic ‘Environmental sustainability, Imagery writing on the theme ‘Plan for the Planet: for life on earth and Designer ecofriendly bag making  competition. Around 180 students participated in the above mentioned activites and the first three winners of each competition were awarded with certificates and trophy on 18th January 2020 on the occasion of grand finale of Srijan 2020. The chief guest for the function was Mrs. Ekta Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner, JMC . She addressed the gathering about the systematic ways of sludge treatment and she also emphasized on youth power to bring innovation in order to keep our environment safe for upcoming generations.

 

2018-2019

Guest lecture

  • The department of Botany and Microbiology organized a Lecture Session on Tissue Culture in the department on 16.Jan 2019. Dr. S.K. Tiwari, Head, Department of Forest Genetics, SFRI, Jabalpur was invited for the purpose. The lecture was delivered in the presence of Fr. Ben A. Rose (Vice Principal), Dr. Mrs. Shikha Bansal (HOD) and other departmental members. The expert, gave a detailed description of the techniques for developing Tissue culture, Regeneration of tissues cultures, Germplasm preservation – In Vitro Approaches, Micropropagation techniques in horticulture and crop improvement, Somatic hybridization, Key parameters for manipulation of plant tissue cultures, Sterile techniques and Genetic manipulation of crop plants The training was imparted to the students of B.Sc II sem IMB, B.Sc IV sem CBZ, IMB, BTB, BTZ,BC & B.Sc VI sem CBZ, IMB, BTB, BTZ & BC.

The students were highly impressed with the fact that a hobby can be converted into a profession if well practiced. They were really motivated to work for the same.      It was a real learning experience for all the Botany students as well as all the faculty members of the department.

Guest lecture

  • Guest lecture by Mr. Parag M. More, Advocate Patent and trademark Attorney Navi Mumbai was delivered at Department of Botany and Microbiology on the topic transformation of ideas and expression. 60 UG and PG students were benefited in this programme where they got to know about the concept of Intellectual Property Right.

The Biofest: Srijan 2019

  • Biofest grand finale {SRIJAN} was organised on national science day (28th Feb 2019). Dr. A.P. Singh, Scientist Animal Biotech Division, JNKVV, Jabalpur was the chief guest., Out of total 16 five competitions viz. Best out of waste, PowerPoint Presentation, Slogan Competition, Salad Decoration and Model Making competition was organised at Department of Botany and Microbiology among which 75 students had participated. First three winners of each activity were awarded with certificates.

Internship programme

  • Internship programme was conducted for 27 PG students of Government M H college of home science and science for women from 25th – 31st march 2019 at department of botany and microbiology under the guidance of Dr. Shikha Bansal (HOD) and Dr. Mamta Gokhale.

Virtual lab demonstration on working of  Thermocycler:

  • The Department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius’ College (Autonomous) Jabalpur organized a Virtual lab demonstration on working of Thermocycler (PCR) by Shrinivas Dighe, Research Fellow, Cardiff University, Whales, UK on 24th August 2018. The students of M.Sc Microbiology and B.SC Industrial Microbiology visualized the practical use of the above sophisticated instrument. Shrinivas gave an elaborated description of reagents preparation and reasons to use them and the methods of result analysis by Gel Documentation and Statistical softwares. He also interacted with the students and faculty members for their queries about the instrument and its technique.

Career in International Arena

  • The department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius’ College (Autonomous) Jabalpur regularly endeavors for inculcating knowledge and skills in the students apart from regular academics. Moving in the same direction, the department organized a guest lecture on “Career in International Arena”. The programme was inaugurated with the welcome address of Principal Dr. Fr. G.V. Arasu. Around 100 students of UG and PG of Bioscience attended the programme. The resource person for the programme was an eminent personality, Dr. Vandana Joshi, Chief of Health, Nutrition and WASH section, UNICEF, Bhutan. Dr. Joshi had qualified PSC and was a government medical officer since 1991. She served World Health organization (WHO) as well as Care International for many years. She also worked as the UNICEF representative for fighting Ebola virus in West Africa during 2014-16 for which she was awarded with Global Staff Award. She has widely travelled in many countries and is recipient of award 2018 for International achievement, University of Sydney, Australia.
  • She delivered a spell bound talk on the possibilities and challenges for career making in foreign countries. She alarmed the students that they must fulfill the expectations of their parents and achieve according to their capabilities. Students need to be flexible in order to adjust themselves to adverse conditions outside their own country as the students have three major problems in abroad viz. language, face and food. She answered all the queries of the students and informed them about the different qualifying exams for different countries. Dr. Shikha Bansal head of the department proposed the vote of thanks while presenting a Tulsi sapling to the guest. Fr. Ben A. Rose, Dr. Sonali Nigam, Dr. Femina Sobin, Dr. Mamta Gokhale and Mrs. Roshni Choubey were the key persons to make this programme a success.

  • Dr. M. Gokhale, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany and Microbiology, St. Aloysius College (Auto.) Jabalpur went to Govt. College Seoni, Chhapara on 19.11.18 to deliver a lecture on the topic “Treasure around us”.

2017-18

ROSE PLANTATION BY ALOYSIAN NATURE CLUB

  • Rose Plantation was organized by B.Sc. First year students of Botany and members of Nature club of St. Aloysius College; they participated in the ecofriendly move through beautiful rose plants with excellent thoughts of increasing greenery in the campus. More than 80 students participated in 18 groups in this event and exhibited their talent. The student had articulated with beautiful rose plant of different colors in the college campus.  Principal Dr. Fr. G. Vazhan Arasu and Vice Principal Fr. Ben Anton Rose were present throughout the programme and appreciated the efforts of students and staff. The programme was organized under the supervision and guidance of Prof. in- charge Dr. Mrs. Shikha Bansal, Nature club, co-ordinated by Dr. Mrs. Sonali Nigam, Dr. Mrs. Femina Sobin, Dr. Mrs. Mamta Gokhale, Mrs. Roshni Choubey Dr. Ranjan Singh and Dr. Ms. Juhi Sharma.

ECOFEST

  • Ecofest 2018 was organized by Department of Botany and Microbiology on 3rd February 2018 with the theme Ecotourism under the banner of Nature club. Chief guest for the event was Mr. Yogendra Richhariya, Marketing head, M.P.tourism and Development Corporation, Jabalpur. The programme started with plantation of medicinal plants in the college garden. The event started with lamp lighting and prayer song. rev. Dr. G.Vazhan Arasu, Principal, St. Aloysius’ College (Autonomous) Jabalpur, showered his blessings and motivated students to participate in such events. Dr. Shikha Bansal, Head, Department of Botany and Microbiology introduced the theme to the students. While addressing the gathering, she inculcated the message of “conserving and preserving the nature: Our moral duty”. The resource person, Mr.Richhariya gave a presentation on “Ecotourism in Madhya Pradesh”. Overall eight competitions including best out of waste, Power Point presentation on sustainable ecotourism with reference to  Jabalpur, Flower arrangement, Floral ornament, model making, Educational cards (Medicinal plants), Photography and  Group song (Nature). Winners of all the competitions were awarded with certificates and prizes. The programme concluded with oath taking ceremony whereby all the members of Nature club pledged to conserve and preserve the nature.

SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION:

  • GUEST LECTURE ON BIOFUEL BY PROF. KHATTAR Date- 28.Feb 2018
  • The department of Botany and Microbiology organized a Guest lecture programme in the department itself. Prof. Khattar from Punjabi University, Patiyala was invited for the purpose. The lecture programme was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Mrs. Shikha Bansal, HOD and other departmental members. The expert gave a detailed description of biofuel, its advantage and applications. He emphasized on Algae fuel, algal biofuel, or algal oil is an alternative to liquid fossil fuels that uses algae as its source of energy-rich oils. Biodiesel is a diesel fuel derived from animal or plant lipids. Algae can be used to produce ‘green diesel’ (also known as renewable diesel, hydrotreating vegetable oil. Algae grow much faster than food crops, and can produce hundreds of times more oil per unit area than conventional crops such as rapeseed, palms, soybeans, or jatropha. The knowledge was imparted to the students of B.Sc I sem IMB, B.Sc IV sem CBZ, IMB, BTB, BTZ,BC & B.Sc VI sem CBZ, IMB, BTB, BTZ & BC. The students were highly impressed with the fact that several groups in various sectors are conducting research on Jatropha curcas, a poisonous shrub-like tree that produces seeds considered by many to be a viable source of biofuels feedstock oil. They were really motivated. It was a real learning experience for all the Botany students as well as all the faculty members of the department.

SUMMER TRAINING:

HANDS-ON MICROBIAL TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES

  • The department of Botany and Microbiology regularly endeavor for the holistic development of students. In tune with this, the department organized 10 days summer training programme entitled “HANDS-ON MICROBIAL TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES” from 20th to 30th June 2018 for the post graduate students of Microbiology. During this programme the students learnt about the principle, working and applications of various sophisticated instruments like Soxhlet Extractor, Flame Photometer, Flourescent Microscope, Steriobinocular, Bioreactor etc. which could help them in qualifying their upcoming semesters, future research work and in making their future in fields of Biosciences. The programme was inougrated on 20th June with the lecture and demonstration by Dr. Shikha Bansal, Head followed by the other faculty members in upcoming days. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Mamta Gokhale and Mrs. Roshni Choubey along with kind cooperation of the other faculty members Dr. Sonali Nigam, Dr. Femina Sobin, Dr. Ranjan Singh and Dr. Juhi Sharma.

 

2016-17

  • Students of M.Sc III sem Microbiology went to attend 15 days training programme entitled “Agricultural Biotechnology- Microbes and their biotechnological interventions with special reference to biological weed management. Held on 05-20.09.2016 organized by DWR, Jabalpur
  • PG students attended 104th Indian Science Congress held at Shri Venkateshwara University, Tirupati on 03-07.01.2017.
  • Under the scheme of self financed Add on course in Water Quality Monitoring, the students of B.Sc IV (IMB) and M.SC II sem (Microbiology) went for an industrial visit to Richhai industrial area to visit Bisleri and Parle G industries on 07.02.17.

 

2015-16

 

  • Guest Lecture: On 14th August 2015 a guest lecture was held by Dr. A. K. Bhattacharya (I.F.S., M.D. M.P. Bamboo Mission) on Bamboo cultivation in M.P. He told students about various uses of Bamboo and career in this field.
  • Disease Awarness Programme: In order to create awareness about the causes, precautions and home remedies of seasonal diseases, the deparment of Botany and Microbiology under the banner of Nature club had organized a Disease awareness Programme on 21 August 2015. The students of M.Sc.I and III sem Microbiology had undertaken initiative for this community service. They conveyed their message through power point presentation and skits.
  • Invited Talk On 8th September 2015- Dr. Ajay Singh Thakur, (Scientist, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India), delivered a lecture on “Future Prospests of Job for Life Science students in Government sector”. He addressed the students of B.Sc. Botany and M.sc Microbiology. He also elaborated on the topic “Software user Training and Involvment of Science College students on soil health cards”. He also discussed about the importance organic farming in current era.
  • Educational trip: From 21st to 23rd September 2015, the Department of Botany and Microbiology had organized an educational trip for the Students of M.Sc. I and III semester (Microbiology) to attend a National workshop on “Cell and Molecular Biology” organized by CSRD, People’s University, Bhopal.
  • Industrial visit: The department of Botany and Microbiology organized an industrial visit for the Students of M. Sc. IInd and IVth sem Microbiology to Narmada gelatin factory Jabalpur on 9th Jan 2016. The students got an exposure to understand the manufacturing and marketing procedures of gelatin as well as other byproducts. Students also visited the Effluent treatment Plant located in the premises.
  • Ecofest: Ecofest 2016 was held on 30th January with the theme “Pradushan hatao. Paryavaran bachao”. S. K. Khare, Scientist, M.P. Pollution Control Board was the chief guest for the function. He addressed the students regarding e waste management followed by plantation in the college premises which gave the message of making clean India and Green India. Principal and Head addressed the students giving them message to understand the responsibility towards our mother nature. Various activities were conducted for the students of UG (Botany) and PG (Microbiology) including environment based quiz session, Poster competition, slogan writing competition, Model making, creating best out of waste and song competition based on nature etc. and the winners of different events were awarded with prizes and certificates.
  • Science day celebration: The department of Botany and Microbiology had celebrated National Science Day from 28th February to 1st march 2016. The programme started with the blessings of Principal Fr. G. Vazhan Arasu. More than 200 students of UG and PG participated in various activities based on the theme of “Role of Microorganisms in Swachh Bharat”. Students expressed their views on clean India through Microbial Technology while elocution. Also quiz and essay writing competition was organized to explore the topic among students. Best three students were awarded with prizes.
  • Industrial visit: Under the self-financed scheme of Add on course in Water Quality Monitoring, the Dept. of Botany and Microbiology had organized an industrial visit on 11/3/2016 for B.Sc IV sem (IMB) and M.Sc II sem (Microbiology) to Sapan industry (Bisleri) and Cocacola industry  Ricchhai, Jabalpur. The students got an opportunity to see the entire process of packaging of drinking water and production and packaging of cocacola products. The students were given demonstration of different sterilization procedures and other physical, chemical and microbiological aspects were discussed in detail with respect to job opportunities.
  • Environmental awareness programme: Under the banner of Aloysian Nature Club the dept. of Botany and Microbiology had organized an Environmental Awareness Programme on 11/3/2016 at industrial area, Ricchhai, Jabalpur. During this various Posters were Presented and the public was made awared about role of Biotech and microbe in swacch bharat abhiyan.
  • Nature club organized medicinal plant awareness programme at richai jbp.the students of b.sc 4th sem with posters and slogan made aware of local available medicinal plant -11/3/2016
  • Department publish quarterly two newsletters “Nature” and “Trends in Microbiology” covering the various aspects of nature and recent development of microbial world respectively

  • Guest lecture by Dr. Stephen Methew on immunology (Natural kille cells) was held on 21st july, 2014 at prerna auditorium.
  • Disease awareness programme was held on 30th August, 2014 by students of M.Sc III sem MIcrobiology.
  • Guest lecure by Prof. R.P.Singh, Professor, BBAU, Lucknow on the topic Bioremediation was held on 21 January 2015 at prerna auditorium.
  • Guest lecure by Dr. Poornima Vajpayee, Scientist, IITR, Lucknow on the topic Q PCR was held on 21 January 2015 at prerna auditorium.
  • Minor Research Project: Study of fungal pathogens of edible mushrooms (Agaricus Sp. and Pleurotus Sp.) of jabalpur. U.G.C. Minor Research Project. Awraded to Mrs. Femina Sobin (Amount Rs. 2,70,000/-).
  • Major Reserach Project Awarded: DST MRP entitled “Isolation of flavonoides——-culture” for 3 years awarded to Dr. (Mrs.) Mamta Gokhale. (Amount 23,00,000/- for a period of 3 years).
  • Dr (Mrs.) Shikha Bansal chaired and judge one of the oral paper presentation in competitive session in 37th all India Botanical conference held in Mumbai (7th -9th november,2014)

  • Members of the department attended National Conference on Sustainable Water Resources Managment: Chalenges and Opportunities held at R.D. University, Jabalpur, (M.P.) on 20-21 Januray 2015.
  • Students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Presented poster in National Conference held at RDU, Jabalpur, on 20-21 January, 2015. Shweta, Reena and Aaishwarya of B.Sc. VI sem (IMB) group won Ist Prize in Poster Presentation on the topic “Rain Water Harvesting”.
  • (Mrs.) Mamta Gokhale went to Weed Science Institute (D.W.S.R.), Jabalpur as Resource Person on 2nd Feb.
  • (Mrs.) Mamta Gokhale worked as demonstrator in the workshop “National Workshop: Applied Tehniques in Biology” at Dept. of Biotechnology for Protoplast Isolation on 5 Febuary 2015.
  • Ecofest: The department of Botany and Microbiology organized ECOFEST on 25 February, 2015 at Prerna Auditorium. On this Occasion Dr. Sanjay Singh delivered his lecture on Biodiversity. The basic theme of the fest was to make environment POLYTHENE FREE. Several theme based competitions including poster, slogan writing, quiz, biorangoli, best out of waste were orgainzed. Plantation was done in the college campus on this occasion.

 

2013-14

 

  • Sc. III sem (Microbiology) students were selected for training programme in Directorate of Weed Science Research institute for 15 days training  on “Microbes and their biotechnology Intervention for sustainable Agriculture ”sponsored by MPCOST. Ms Ritu Gautam and Aporwa Sahu were given Best Trainee award ,Ms.Shaina Gaikwad most interactive student award and Ms. Monica Saini most diligent student award in the training programme.
  • The department organized National Seminar on “Frontiers in Modern Biology: From Discovery to Application” from 6th – 7th September 2013 sponsored by UGC,Bhopal.Academicians from various colleges and institutes, scientists from research institutes, researchers from different organization and post graduate students of different institutions attended the seminar. It was well marked by the invited talk of eminent scientists of this field.
  • Department organized Interdisciplinary Seminar on “Quest for Career Prospects” from 9th -10th October 2013 for P.G students.
  • Department also organized Disease awareness programme on Hepatitis, AIDS, Typhoid etc. on 19th October 2013.The main objectives was to create awareness about seasonal diseases and home remedies.
  • Educational Tour: The department organizes educational tour every year to attend either International or National seminar. This year Post graduate students attended two days National seminar on “Frontiers in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics” in Dr.D.Y.Patil University, Navi Mumbai, from 30th to 31st Jan, 2014. Mrs. Femina Sobin and Dr.Mrs.Mamta Gokhale along with 16 students of M.Sc. II & IV Semester, Microbiology attended the seminar. The students presented posters and they got a chance to know about current happenings in field of science which helped them in developing their own research skills.
  • Bonsai Training Programme was organized by the department on 1st February 2014.Expert Mrs.Manisha Dubey gave practical demonstration and explained the techniques of how to develop bonsai plants to the students.
  • Five days training programme was organized on “Drinking water and Environmental pollution” and “Mushroom cultivation” sponsored by Department of P.G. Studies and Research in Rural Development, Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur, from 6th -11th February 2014.
  • Eco fest: The department organized Eco fest on 15th February 2014, under which various competitions like Slogan, Poster, Quiz, Creating best out of waste, bio rangoli were held. Plantation was also done by the students in the college campus. This program encouraged the students to clean and save environment.
  • Department of Botany and Microbiology along with Department of Zoology and Biotechnology in collaboration with M.P.Pollution Control Board celebrated Science Day on 28th February 2014 under which students took part in Slogan competition, posters competition and Model making competition.
  • Guest Lectures: On 24th – 25th March 2014, Professor R.P.Mishra, Department of Biosciences, R.D.V.V Jabalpur delivered lecture on Biostatistics.
  • Sonali Nigam and M.Sc. IV sem (Dissertation students) attended the two days National Seminar on “Innovations in Science and Technology for inclusive Development” from 26th-27th March 2014 jointly organized by The Indian Science Congress Bhopal Chapter and M.P. Council of Science and Technology, Bhopal.
  • Research and other Facilities of the department: M.Sc. Dissertation work in the field of Microbiology under the supervision of departmental teachers is a major achievement of the department by which students get platform regarding their research and understanding in their field of interest. Department is continuously involved in research activities. Currently 01 major and 01 minor research is ongoing in the department. The department is also running UGC Sponsored add on course Water Quality Monitoring.
  • Department publish quarterly two newsletters “Nature” and “Trends in Microbiology” covering the various aspects of nature and recent development of microbial world respectively.

 

2012-13

 

  • Visit of St. Xavier school students: Students from St.Xaviers School visited the department on 21.07.2012 for basic knowledge on instrument working. Students learned about the working of instruments such as Gel Doc, HPLC, motic software, Fermenter etc.
  • Eco fest: The department organized Eco fest on 2.09.2012 under which various competitions like Slogan, Poster, Quiz, Creating best out of e waste, paper bag making were held. Plantation was also done by the students in the college campus. This program encouraged the students to make environment save and clean.
  • Educational Tour: The department is organizing educational tour every year to attend either National or International seminar. This year Post graduate students attended three days National seminar on “Biodiversity and conservation of waste and marine ecosystem of India” in R.J. College, Ghatkopar West Mumbai from 13th to 15th  September, 2012 under the leadership of  Sonali Nigam and Ms. Shikha Gauri as in charge teachers. Tour comprises of 40 students of M.Sc I & III Semester, Microbiology and two teachers. The students got exposure to meet various scholars and along with this they got a chance to know about current happenings in field of science which helped them in developing their own research skills.
  • Guest Lectures: The department organized guest lecture series from 2nd – 8th February Mr.Anand Deo Asst.Prof.MITCON Instiute of management Pune delivered lecture on “Management opportunities for life sciences” .Professor S.S.Sandhu  Department of Biosciences ,R.D.V.V Jabalpur gave lecture on “Vector Biology”.Dr.Yogita Gharade    Scientist ,DWSR Jabalpur  lecture on “Biostatistics” .
  • Research Fellow Ms Amita Shrivastava was conferred with Young scientist award of 25000/- by Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (MPCST), Bhopal on 28th Februray 2013.
  • Guest Lectures: On 5th March 2013 Professor P.K.Singhal Department of Biosciences ,R.D.V.V Jabalpur delivered lecture on Biostatistcs.
  • Excursion Tour: Local study excursion for students is also organized by the department, preferably to bring them in close harmony with nature and study the details about the applied aspects of Botany as well as to keep them abreast with the recent trends in research. In this academic session excursion tour was organized to Shastra dhara nearby place Mandla on 12.02.2013 under the theme of “International River Year” to give awareness about water pollution and effect of it in environment.

  • Guest lecture was conducted by Dr. Jamaluddin, Emeritus scientist, Deptt. Biosciences, RDVV, Jabalpur on the topic “ Mushroom Cultivation” on 16.03.11
  • Guest lecture was conducted by Dr. N.D.Sharma, Ex- Head, Deptt of plant pathology, JNKVV, Jabalpur on “ Market value of mushroom” on 18.03.11.
  • Guest lecture was conducted by Dr. Sam Kuruvilla, NCBS, Balgalore on “ Scope of biological sciences” on 09.01.12.
  • Certificate course on Tools and techniques in microbial technology was held on 04.02.11 and module awas released on 10.04.12.

  • Ayushi Binker of B.Sc. III year completed and cleared IIT JAM for M.Sc.
  • Research Publication – All PG students are continuously supervised to undertake research activity 15 students of M.Sc. (Microbiology) contributed research articles during 2020-21 in Research Journals and Edited Books.

2019-2020

  • Research activity for students– Two Students Anshul Dubey and Himesh Namdeo of M.Sc Microbiology, participated in National bio- entrepreneurship Competition organized by C-CAMP and BREC. They qualified state level and went to Regional level for paper presentation in Delhi Aerocity.
  • Newsletter under the head of Nature and Trends in Microbiology focused on Microbiome of gut were released. Students of Department were assessed to improve scientific writing and their ability to understand recent research article on the current research of the subject.

  • Amita Shrivastava was the recipient of Young Scientist Award 2013 by MPCST, Bhopal.
  • During 15 days training programme on “Microbes and their biotechnology Intervention for sustainable Agriculture” in DWSR, Jabalpur. sponsored by MPCOST, the students of M.Sc III sem Ritu Gautam and Apoorva Sahu secured Best trainee award, Ku.  Monica Saini got Most Diligent Student Award and Ms. Shaina Gaikwad got Most Interactive Student Award.

2013-14

  • Students of M.Sc (Microbiology) IV semester, attended National Science Day Celebration organized by Directorate of Weed Science and Research (DWSR), Jabalpur on 28th Feb,2014.
  • Ms. Shaina Gaikwad was conferred with  first prize in an oratorical competition on “ Role of Science in the development of Agriculture in India” during the above mentioned programme.

2014-2015

  • Saraswati Bai received best trainee award and Pooja Sharma was given Most Interactive student award during a 15 days National training programme on “Bioherbicides with special emphasis to microbial biotechnology”, 27th Jan to 10th Feb 2015, organized by DWSR, Jabalpur.
  • Ms Priya Singh, Ms. Priya Deepti and Mr. Suryaprakash Yadav of M.Sc. II Sem secured I Prize in poster competition, Ku Ankita, Ku. Aneeta  and Ku. Priyanka of B.Sc IV sem got II Prize in model making competition and  Mr. Abhishek singh Narvaria and Mr. Devendra of B.Sc. VI semester won I  and III Prize respectively in quiz competition during “Intercollegiate Events in Biotechnology” organized by RDVV, Jabalpur on 30-31 March 2015.
