The Department of History “Where excellence is not a habit,but a tradition” has a history as old as St. Aloysius’ College. The Department of History was established in the year 1951 to teach the U.G. course to the students and it is continuing its journey successfully till date with utmost effort on the part of the faculty members .


Mission
To inculcate in the students a sense of pride and patriotism so as to transform them into culturally responsible citizens. To guard them from the dangers of any distortion of history as far as its objectivity is concerned.


Vision
To educate students for wholesome thinking and creative learning, making it sustainable by constant recourse to India’s glorious heritage, and to pave way for cultural harmony and concord.

  • The Department of History organized an educational visit to the Rani Durgawati Museum, Jabalpur, on 20th November 2025 with the objective of providing students with experiential learning and firsthand exposure to historical artefacts and cultural heritage. The visit was an integral part of the department’s academic enrichment activities, aimed at bridging classroom learning with practical observation.

Students from B.A. History Semester I, III, V, and Honours actively participated in the excursion. The museum visit enabled students to closely examine a wide range of exhibits representing the rich historical, cultural, and archaeological heritage of the region, including sculptures, inscriptions, coins, weapons, manuscripts, and ethnographic materials.

The educational excursion was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Manju Solomon, Head, Department of History, who provided detailed explanations of the artefacts on display. Dr. Solomon elaborated on their historical context, artistic styles, material culture, and significance in understanding regional history, particularly the legacy of Rani Durgawati and the Gondwana kingdom. The interactive explanations encouraged students to engage critically with the exhibits and relate them to their prescribed syllabus.

The visit proved to be highly informative and enriching, helping students develop a deeper appreciation for historical sources beyond textbooks. It enhanced their observational skills, historical interpretation, and understanding of museum studies as an important discipline within historical research.

Overall, the educational visit to the Rani Durgawati Museum was a successful and meaningful academic activity, contributing significantly to the holistic learning experience of the students and reinforcing the department’s commitment to innovative and experiential modes of teaching history.

The Department of History, under the leadership of Dr. Manju Solomon, Head of the Department, organized a special event to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti on 1st October. The celebration aimed to honour the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing his enduring contributions to India’s freedom struggle and his principles of truth and non-violence.

As part of the program, a Speech Competition on the theme “Contributions of Mahatma Gandhi” was conducted for students from across the college. Participants eloquently expressed their thoughts on Gandhiji’s ideals, his leadership in the national movement, and the relevance of his teachings in the modern world.

The competition was judged by Dr. Vishwas Patel, Head of the Department of Political Science, and Dr. Anthonima Robin, Faculty Member, Department of Economics. Their insightful evaluation and encouraging remarks added great value to the event.

After a series of impressive performances, Ms. J. K. Joshwyn emerged as the First Prize Winner for her articulate presentation and deep understanding of Gandhian philosophy.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shivangi Dwivedi, who highlighted the importance of Gandhiji’s values in shaping responsible and compassionate citizens. The program successfully fostered a spirit of reflection and inspiration among all participants.

  • The Department of History, St. Aloysius Autonomous College, Jabalpur, successfully organized the Intra-College and Inter-School History Fiesta 2025 under the inspiring theme “Echoes of Time.” The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from several schools and colleges across Jabalpur in diverse competitions such as model making, poster presentation, quiz, and historical character portrayal cum fancy dress contests.

Inaugural Ceremony

The fiesta commenced with an inaugural session graced by eminent dignitaries:

Fr. (Dr.) J. Ben Anton Rose extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests and participants, emphasizing the importance of such academic platforms in nurturing a deeper understanding of history among students.

Significance of the Event

The History Fiesta 2025 was not only a celebration of historical learning but also an initiative aligned with the ideals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, promoting the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). The event also coincided with World Tourism Day 2025, emphasizing the interconnection between history, heritage, and tourism.

The fiesta was inaugurated in the esteemed presence of Mr. Sanjay Malhotra, Regional Manager of MPTDC, Jabalpur, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Rashmi Tandon Mishra, Controller of Examinations, Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor. The college’s Fr. Principal, Dr. J. Ben Anton Rose, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and highlighted the significance of such initiatives in nurturing historical understanding among students.

The competitions were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges comprising Dr. R. N. Shrivastava, Professor of History, Govt. MKB College Jabalpur; Dr. Vandana Gupta, Head, Department of History, Govt. MKB College Jabalpur; Dr. Alpana Singh, Head, Department of History, Mata Gujari College Jabalpur; and Dr. Manvendra Yadav, Assistant Professor of History, PM Shri Govt. Mahakaushal College Jabalpur.

Adding to the excitement, the results of the competitions were declared with great cheer. The Overall Best Team Award was bagged by St. Gabriel Sr. Sec. School, Ranjhi. The Runner-Up position went to Kendriya Vidyalaya GCF No. 1, while St. Thomas School secured the position of 2nd Runner-Up. The 3rd Runner-Ups were St. Aloysius Sr. Sec. School and Christ Church ICSE School, Jabalpur. The enthusiastic performances of all participants made the event a true celebration of talent and knowledge.

The fiesta not only celebrated historical knowledge but also propagated the Indian Knowledge System, aligning with the ideals of National Education Policy 2020. Significantly, the event coincided with World Tourism Day 2025, thereby emphasizing the integral relationship between history, heritage, and tourism.

The successful coordination of the fiesta was made possible under the convenership of Dr. Manju Solomon, Head, Department of History, St. Aloysius Autonomous College, Jabalpur, and Dr. Shivangi Dwivedi, Assistant Professor, Department of History, St. Aloysius College, Jabalpur. Their leadership was well supported by the dedicated efforts of the student members of the History Forum of St. Aloysius Autonomous College, Jabalpur, whose commitment ensured the seamless execution of the program.

The vibrant participation of young learners, coupled with insightful evaluations by experts, made the History Fiesta 2025 a memorable event, truly resonating with its theme “Echoes of Time”.

  • To commemorate the birth anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Department of History, St. Aloysius College, Jabalpur, organized a Speech and poster Competition on 26th July 2025. The theme of the event was:

“Nation First: Echoing Tilak’s Legacy in Today’s Youth”

Department of History visited the historical site of Singaurgarh fort associated with the legacy of Gond dynasty on 15th February, 2025.

   

Visit to Rani Durgawati Museum 

The Department of history organized a trip to museum on 27 September 2023, in which the students of BA 1, 2 and 3rd year participated. The trip began with a lot of enthusiasm and vigour. The students were given a short lecture on the life of Rani Durgawati depicting her contribution in the moulding the significance of autonomy and freedom. The inside of the museum was intense. There were many entrances and enormous paintings.

Gandhi JayantI Celebrations

St. Aloysius’ College, Department of History, organized a Poster and Speech competition on October 7th 2023, on the 154th birth anniversary of Mahtama Gandhi ji. To pay tribute to Father of our Nation Bapu Mahatma Gandhi. The objective of the programme was to create awareness about peaceful ways of Mahatma Gandhi Ji to achieve National Freedom.  Over 40 UG students participated on the theme “Contribution of Mahatma Gandhi ji in Indian National Freedom Movement” and the prize were awarded. The event included paying homage and tribute to our Bapu by offering flowers, recitation of beautiful Hindi bhajans followed by the speech and poster competition. The number of students participated were around 40. Dr Anaji D’Souza, Vice Principle Academic and chief guest address the gathering by her motivating speech. Dr Vishwas Patel and Dr Anthonima Robbin judged the speech competition and poster competition was judged by Major Sonal Rai and Dr Manju Solomon.

Visit to Chausath Yogini Temple

The Department of history organized an educational trip on 22th October 2022. At 11.30 am students of History from BA 2nd and 3rd year went to Chausath Yogini Temple, Bheadaghat under the guidance of Mrs Manju Maria Solomon, HOD History. Chausath Yogini Temple is basically a historical temple built by Rajputs. It is protected under the ASI.  The means of travelling were arranged for the students. It was a great experience as place was quite untouched from the city.

Birsa Munda Jayanti-

The Department of history celebrated the Birsa Munda Jayanti on 15th November 2022. The event started by paying homage and tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda followed by patriotic poems and speeches on him by the students. Dr Viswas Patel, Dr Manju Solomon graced the event with their auspicious presence. The event ended with patriotic feeling and we all dispersed with positive vibe carrying his memories and lessons along with us.

Visit to old age home

The Department of History organized a visit to old age home, On 2nd December, 2023 We had the opportunity to visit an old age home, Little Sisters of the Poor Rimjha , Jabalpur with History department with Dr. Manju Maria Solomon (HOD) and Dr. Adarsh Kumar Mishra. We spent good time with the elderly people and donated some essentials to them. The people there talked to us, sang songs with us. The purpose of the visit was to spend time with the elderly residents, understand their experiences, and contribute positively to their well-being. The visit there was a valuable experience, offering insights into the lives of the elderly residents and emphasizing the need for compassionate care. They shared joy with the elderly, raised funds, and provided essential raw food, initiating the Christmas season with compassion and support.

Parakram Divas

The Department of history celebrated the birth anniversary of the most rebellious freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chadra Bose on 23 January 2023. The event was anchored by S. Shashikala and Alina Tirkey and was graced by lecturers of various Arts Department who encouraged and supported the students. The event had a speech competition and poster competition which was judged by Dr Manju Soloman and by Soma Guha. Students actively participated and the event was concluded by the address of our chief guest DR Anjali D’suza and Dr Ramendra Prasad Ojha. The vote of thanks Prasasti Shrivatsav. Visit to Orphanage – Rajkumari Bai Bal Niketan

The Department of History organized a visit on 15th November 2022 to Rajkumari Bai Bal Niketan which was in Shastri bridge Jabalpur. This visit was done on the initiative of Dr Manju Maria Solomon HOD History. Students collected money, clothes and food items and the lot other things to donate. Students were moved by the innocent children and felt lucky to have been blessed with the family. As a responsible citizen of this country, it is our duty to help and cheer the less privileged children.

National E-Seminar on 75 years of Independence

An account of the 75th year of Independence, a National E-Seminar was organised by the Department of History St. Aloysius College (Auto) Jabalpur on 14th August 2021. The Seminar was addressed by the chief guest, Vice Principal Dr Kallol Das. Dr. Manju Maria Solomon, Head of Department of History was the convenor and delivered a speech and various objectives of the seminar. The Seminar comprised of two sessions: The First session was conducted by Dr. Tuhina Johri, Head of Department of Political Science. The Keynote speaker for this session was the professor Naveen Gideon, Head of Department of History Government Girls PG Auto. College of excellence Sagar (MP).
